Omar SAADOUNE’s work centers on the cultural medium of sugar in Morocco and explores discourses regarding its symbolism. As a crucial staple of the African plantation trade and a highly consumed product in Morocco, sugar carries with it stories of desire, consumption, and exploitation. Through the act of breaking and smashing bumpy sugar lumps, the artist raises questions about colonialism, addiction, and pleasure, as well as the interaction between society and the viewer.
