Space of Memory 기억의 공간

This piece of artwork was place in the forest of Mt. Samseong, and it formulated a long and narrow path by using two bookshelves. Since it formed a gentle curve, we couldn’t see the end of it from the entrance where it started, and the long narrow passage was filled with sunlight coming through yellow transparent roof on clear days. Because of this, the inside of the artwork exuded totally different mood from the surroundings as if it is a closed space. Actually, because of the empty bookshelves, it is an open space towards its external environment.

The artist, Seung Young Kim has been exploring the subject of memory and communication through various mediums including installation, video, and photograph. His arts are based on the idea that life of a person is traces of memory, and that memory is formed in the relationships with other people, objects, or space. The artist once said that he/she finds the motives of his art in the process of accepting different emotions aroused in the process of communication. The exhibit period of the [Space of Memory], which was originally a temporarily installation, was extended due to positive responses of audience, but it collapsed by the Typhoon Bolaven and it was demolished in 2012.
